The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog found the way to our area from the far American Louisiana. The breed began to shape a long time ago. It´s legends gimped history takes us to the Native Indians, who accopmanied these dogs for hunting, and they were an excellent companions and guardians. They lived together close to Lake named Catahoula. The Native Indians gave the name Catahoula dog - which means "clear water" - apparently for transparent and mysterious blue eyes, so characteristics for the breed. Somebody can also consider other senses of tittle. There are indications that the name originated misinterpretation pronunciation "Couthaougoula" what could be the expression of Choctaw Indian tribe.
The formation of this breed can be credited with a combative Sapiard, who in the year 1539 headed by the cammander Hernando De Soto stepped into this territory with the desire for colonization, gold and riches. They brought with them "War Dogs" - mastiffs and greyhounds. These dogs were used for hunting animals, guarding the camps, but also for intimidating and blackmail of the Native Indians. When they leaving, they leave their broken dogs on the battlefield, mercy of their fate. The intimidated Native Indians took them and further crossed with red wolves - the ordinary residents of this area. Their descendants were the basic of the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog.
Later is written, that in the year 1682, the French exceeded the Mississippi River. These French brought with them their own dogs, known as a Beauceron, which were used for hunting wild boars. At this blace they were fascinated of the very strange looking dogs with scary eyes. They found that the wolf - looking like a dog, was successfull in hunting in the swamps, for it´s very sensitive nose and webbed paws on. Dogs could very easily folded back animals from the swamps. The French have befriended these wolf dogs, and further crossed with their dogs, with faith in even better hunters, guardians, hunting and cattle dogs and better companions. Catahoulas, as we know them today, are the dogs that are the outcomes of these crossings. It´s really strange and mysterious dog with a sorf of cloud of mystical around of it´s spotted body.

Therefore, some of the breeders searched for the best of bests, and then they had the best litters from all around of the state. Since a year 1951, the first records are known, on the regitration of individual dogs.
